A friend of a deceased St. John’s County MP who died in the line of duty helps raise money for his family.
ST. Augustine, Florida. — A community organization that helps local law enforcement held a fundraiser Saturday for a deceased St. John’s County MP who died trying to take someone into custody.
The Signal 34 Foundation said the event was dedicated to Sgt. The family of Mikhail Kunovich was taken care of. A fundraiser was held at Elks Lodge in St. Augustine to show support for the deceased MP and his family.
The event included a raffle and a silent auction.
Kunovic, who worked for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office for 25 years, died in May after suffering health problems while fighting to arrest Virgilio Aguilara-Mendez, who is accused of breaking into a permanently closed business off a state road. 16.

Aguilar-Mendez is now charged with murder in connection with the deputy’s death.
Kevin Munger, co-founder of the Signal 34 Foundation, said what happened to Kunovic is sad, but it was a good way to remember his friend.
“If we can get the people together and honor Mike for me, it doesn’t matter if we raise even a dime,” Munger said. “We don’t have enough money that we can raise.”
The children of Kunovic were presented with a gift in honor of their father at the fundraiser.
