Russell and Leclerc lead Friday practice
George Russell set the fastest time in FP1 on an intermediate tire when it started to rain, with a time of 1:38.795. Seven riders, including the two-time reigning world champion, opted not to complete the lap in deteriorating conditions. Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio PĂ©rez raised the red flag early as he dipped a tire into the grass and crashed into the barriers.
Conditions were much better late Friday afternoon on the outskirts of Budapest when Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc posted a time of 1:17.686 to lead the FP2 protocol. McLaren’s Lando Norris continued his recent strong form with just one lap. 0.015 seconds behind Leclerc. Pierre Gasly was third in 1:17.918.

Daniel Ricciardo returns to F1
A familiar smiling face returns to the launching pad this weekend as 2014 World Cup third-place finisher and Netflix darling Daniel Ricciardo replaces out-of-fuck rookie Nick de Vries at AlphaTauri. Ricciardo had previously played for the team in 2012 and 2013 when it was known as Red Bull Toro Rosso until he was transferred to the Red Bull parent team.
In 2014, he stunned reigning four-time champion Sebastian Vettel by 71 points ahead of Vettel and won three races before Vettel’s goose egg. After a wild run alongside Verstappen at Red Bull, Ricciardo became frustrated with Renault (2019-2020) and McLaren (2021-2022) and was not offered a full-time job in 2023.
Qualifying format setting
F1 and Pirelli are trying to change the qualifying sessions this weekend to improve sustainability. Instead of 13 sets of tires for the weekend, teams will only be allocated 11 and must use hard tires with white stripes in the first quarter, medium tires with yellow stripes in the second quarter, and soft tires with red stripes in the third quarter if it doesn’t rain (more on that later). Previously, teams were allowed free choice of any tire in any session. This format was due to debut at Imola in May before that race was canceled due to disastrous flooding in northern Italy.
Top drivers and best bets for the Hungarian Grand Prix
This is Verstappen’s world, and the rest of the grid simply populates it at his benevolent whim. The two-time reigning world champion is already on his way to three tournaments in a row and is entering the weekend as the big favorite with a -350 payline at BetMGM.

Earlier this week, Yahoo Sports’ Nick Bromberg wrote that this week and every Grand Prix thereafter is essentially a race for second place. In addition to betting on Verstappen to win the pole and the race, Bromberg recommends betting that Lewis Hamilton will finish on the podium and Esteban Ocon will finish in the top ten. Hamilton has eight pole positions and eight race wins at the Hungaroring, with Okon’s only F1 victory coming at the track in 2021.
