Family remembers 14-year-old who died in boat crash in Bradenton

BRADENTON, Florida (FloridaToday.news) — The family of 14-year-old Joseph Virgil Hunter Ghani says he loved the outdoors.

“They went fishing that evening and that was the last time I saw him shortly before he left,” said Joseph Gainey, the teen’s grandfather.

Gainey’s life was cut short when he spent time on a boat on the Manatee River with his 17-year-old brother. FWC officials say a 45-year-old Palmetto man driving a jet ski crashed into their boat, killing a teenager and seriously injuring his older brother.

“Sometimes it’s very difficult to understand what it is, he was just an exceptional child,” said the teenager’s grandfather.

The teen was due to start his freshman year of high school next month, but now his family must plan his funeral.

“It all takes its toll.”

The family launched GoFundMe to help pay for the teen’s funeral, as well as support the recovery of his older brother, who remains in critical condition in the hospital.
