Fugitive caught: 71-year-old extradited from Spain to face Miami Federal Court on child pornography charges
MIAMI (TodayNews) – After more than a decade of dodging the law, Carlos Blanco, 71, has been extradited from Spain to the United States to face federal charges of possessing and distributing child pornography in the Southern District of Florida. This week, Blanco appeared in federal court in Miami for the first time, marking the end of his 12-year run from justice.
The saga began on November 3, 2010, when federal law enforcement first arrested Blanco, a citizen of the United States, Honduras and Cuba, and charged him with possession and distribution of child pornography. After being released on bail, Blanco was expected to plead guilty at a hearing scheduled for February 24, 2011. However, he failed to appear at the hearing, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant and declare him a fugitive on February 25, 2011.
After more than a decade on the run, Blanco’s luck ran out in March 2023 when he was detained in Spain. His arrest followed a request for his provisional arrest by the Office of International Affairs (OIA) of the Criminal Division of the US Department of Justice. Blanco agreed to his extradition to the United States.
Prior to his arrest in Spain, Blanco had lived there since July 2022, and before that he had lived in Honduras for 11 years.
The extradition was announced by U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Marchenzie Lapointe and Miami FBI Special Agent Jeffrey B. Veltri.
