FWC reminds fishermen of rules and safety ahead of mini lobster season

FLORIDA (TodayNews) — Lobster lovers and fishermen are getting ready for the highly anticipated two-day “Mini Lobster Season” starting at 00:01 on Wednesday and ending at midnight on Thursday.

As an opportunity for recreational fishermen to get a head start in lobster fishing to commercial boats, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is hosting a media event at 10:00 am to discuss key rules and regulations.

The FWC media event will focus on important topics to promote safety and responsible fishing during the mini-season.

Among the key aspects that will be discussed are the rules and regulations governing the event, the safety of dive flags, the safe practice of boating, and the correct method of measuring lobsters with a live demonstration.

Fishermen participating in the mini-season are advised to adhere to the specific rules set out by the FWC.

Monroe County and Biscayne National Park have a daily baggage limit of 6 lobsters per person, while the rest of Florida allows a maximum of 12 lobsters per person.

All lobsters caught during the event must meet a minimum size, with a shell greater than 3 inches measured in the water. It is important that participants carry and use a measuring device at all times to ensure compliance with these rules.

The mini-season precedes the official lobster season, which is scheduled to start on August 6, 2023 at 00:01 and run until March 31, 2024 at midnight.

During the regular season, fishermen will continue to follow the rules set by the FWC to maintain sustainable lobster populations and conserve the marine ecosystem.
