Hillsborough County Detention Assistant Arrested for Drunk Driving

The HCSO reported that Deputy Detention Officer Travis Kelly crashed into another car stopped at a red light.

TAMPA, Florida. A Hillsborough County Detention Assistant is in jail after being arrested for drunk driving Thursday night, according to the sheriff’s office.

At around 7:12 p.m., Deputy Detention Officer Travis Kelly was driving west on Lithia Pinecrest Street before crashing into another vehicle stopped at a traffic light, deputies said in a press release.

Deputies said Kelly showed signs of a health problem and a DUI team was called in to investigate. A 33-year-old man was taken into custody where he provided a breath sample that turned out to be 0.276 BAC.

“With such a high blood alcohol level, I am grateful that no one was seriously injured or, worse, killed,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Of the many things this man will lose because of his irresponsible decision to drive while intoxicated, one of the first will be his career in the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.”

Kelly was sent to East Jail and charged with driving under the influence with more than 0.15 property damage.

No casualties were reported during the accident. Currently, he is on administrative leave without pay until the results of the internal affairs check are received.

Works at UKSO since 2015.
