K-9 at Miami-Dade Police Airport dies after suffering a medical episode
EDITOR’S NOTE: In a previous version of this article, NBC6 attributed K-9’s death to heatstroke. The police called to explain that they were awaiting an autopsy to determine if the heat was the cause of the medical episode.
Officials said a K-9 from the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Airport Operations Bureau died Wednesday following a medical episode.
Around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, her handler requested emergency care because K-9, a 5-year-old child known as Zita, had what appeared to be a medical episode.

She was taken to VCA Knowles Central Veterinary Hospital where she was examined and treated.
But on Thursday, the Miami-Dade Police Department announced that K-9 had died.
While it is possible that K-9 suffered heat stroke, an autopsy will determine the cause of her death, officials said.
We regret to inform you that our Airport Operations Bureau, @flymia, K9 Zita, passed away. Zita joined MDPD on 01/07/2019, after completing @TSA National Canine Explosive Detection Program. Our condolences go to K9 handler Zita, Officer Kenol. pic.twitter.com/UE9lBoVgEe
