Lake County needs to fill 167 school vacancies. Here’s how to apply
COUNTY OF LAKES, Florida. – Several school districts in Central Florida, including Lake County, are looking to get results when it comes to filling vacancies ahead of the new school year.
Several school districts in Central Florida have over 100 job openings ahead of the new school year. On Wednesday, Lake County schools held a district job fair.
Dozens of hopeful job seekers spent Wednesday morning looking for new jobs in Lake County schools. One of the job seekers, Christine Tarrant, told us she hoped to get a job as a kindergarten teacher.
“I just fell in love with it,” Tarrant said. “I love teaching kids because they get excited when they learn something new.”

While she enjoys the job, she said it comes with its own challenges.
“There are a lot of vacancies because, unfortunately, a lot of people are leaving this career because, as you know, sometimes it is stressful,” Tarrant said.
Lake County currently has 82 teaching positions that they hope to fill, but the total number of vacancies in the county is 167. However, some of these vacancies were filled on Wednesday morning. Three people were hired during the first hour of the job fair, Stephanie Horvath being one of these new hires.
Horvath said she was invited as an ESE paraprofessional.
“It’s a very rewarding career and I mean, it’s all about the kids at the end of the day,” Horvath said. “It’s all about the kids.”
Horvath acknowledges that working in education can also be stressful. She said she was saddened by the number of open positions across the board.
“Our children are suffering because of this,” Horvath said. “You know, teachers are overworked, they are overworked. Well, they are tired. They spend their own money in classes. I mean, I see it every day. So it’s sad.”
Lake County Schools Hiring Partner Quiana Peterson said the county is hard at work recruiting new employees and retraining those already in Lake County schools.
“We actually put a lot of emphasis on retention and engagement, trying to reach out to all the different groups, not just teachers, our bus drivers, our teacher assistants, trying to make sure they feel heard, that they see our presence.” Peterson said. “This year we made an effort to really make sure we hit all the bus slots, you know, and so on.”
