Miami Police Director exits operating room after critical injury in Tampa as Florida police investigate

MIAMI (AP/FloridaToday.news) — The director of the Miami-Dade Police Department is in stable condition following surgery at Tampa County Hospital, the mayor of Miami-Dade said Monday.

“Following a critical injury in Tampa yesterday, Chief Ramirez has been hospitalized and is in a critical but stable condition,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levin Kawa said.

Alfredo “Freddie” Ramirez, 52, was in Tampa for a law enforcement conference, officials said.

Amid speculation about what caused Ramirez’s injury, the mayor said that “All that matters right now is the well-being of Chief Ramirez,” and Florida law enforcement officials said they were investigating the “incident.”

“We have been informed by local law enforcement that our director, Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez, was critically injured in the Tampa area. It is our understanding that he has now undergone surgery.” Miami-Dade Police Department statement. “We ask you to pray for him.”

The incident, which occurred on Interstate 75 south of Tampa, is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the statement said.

Ramirez is a 27-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department. In May, he announced his intention to seek election to the newly created office of sheriff in 2024, signaling his desire to remain a leading law enforcement officer.

Around 6 a.m. Monday, Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss expressed concern for Ramirez’s well-being and offered prayers for his family. on twitter.

Ramirez, who has been with the Miami-Dade Police since 1995, has risen through the ranks to become director of police in 2020. In 2022, he received a further promotion to oversee the Miami-Dade Police Department and Fire and Rescue as Interim Chief of Public Safety, a position later made permanent by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levin Cava.

While details are limited, the department said the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the incident.
