The 2nd Annual Backpack Hero will provide school supplies to kids in the Tampa Bay area.

Local organizations across Hillsborough County are gearing up for the biggest school event of the year.

The second annual Backpack Hero event kicks off next Saturday, July 29th. It will take place on the Bay Life Church Brandon campus at 9:30 am.

The aim is to provide school age children with backpacks and other school supplies free of charge before the start of the year.

More than 1,200 children are expected to attend this year’s event.

Backpack Hero works with various local organizations to bring small school activities together.

The organizers say that it is not only about preparing children for school, but also about preparing the whole family.

“As part of this event, we are hosting a resource fair. So we have over 50 organizations that will be here with us to discuss everything from after-school programs to health options and employment opportunities with our families. We’re really trying to get the whole family ready for the school year,” said Sarah Thompson, emergency services director for Echo of Brandon.

Registration closes Friday, July 28th. For more information about the event and how to register your family, click here.

Backpack Hero is also raising donations ahead of the event.
